Mohammed Shami Arjun Award, Sports Awards: India’s best performing players were honored with National Sports Awards by President Draupadi Murmu in a grand ceremony on Tuesday, where cricketer Mohammed Shami arrived at Rashtrapati Bhavan amid thunderous applause.
In this, the biggest honor Khel Ratna Award has been given to badminton star pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, while star cricketer Mohammed Shami was honored with the Arjuna Award. This time, Mohammed Shami is among the 26 athletes that received the Arjuna Award.
Badminton players Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy were selected for the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award for their stellar performances in 2023. He won his and the country’s first gold medal in badminton in the Asian Games in 2023. In addition, they took home the titles of Indonesia Open Super 1000 and Asian Championship. The men’s pair is currently playing in the Malaysia Open Super 1000 and hence did not attend the ceremony.
Due to the Hangzhou Asian Games, which took place from August 29 to August 31, the sports awards ceremony—which normally marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand—was postponed September 23 to October 8 last year.

Shami was the hero of the team in the World Cup Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami had performed strongly in the ODI World Cup 2023 last year. He took maximum 24 wickets in the tournament. 33 year old experienced fast bowler Shami is currently suffering from ankle injury. For this reason he could not play the Test series on the South Africa tour. But now he is expected to play in the 5-match home test series against England.
Khel Ratna winners are given a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh, while the Arjuna and Dronacharya awards carry a cash prize of Rs 15 lakh.Additionally, R Vaishali, who just attained the rank of grandmaster in chess, received the Arjuna Award.She is the elder sister of Star Grand Master R Praggnanandha. Vaishali is the third female player in the country to become a Grand Master after Koneru Humpy and Dronavalli Harika.
Young star pistol shooter 19-year-old Isha Singh also could not attend the ceremony due to her participation in the Asian Olympic Qualifiers in Jakarta. He qualified for the Paris Olympics by winning individual and team gold in the 10 meter air pistol event on Monday.
Other veteran players selected for the Arjuna Award this year included former junior world champion and last year’s Senior Championship bronze medalist wrestler Anant Panghal, last year’s World Championship bronze winner boxer Mohammad Hussamuddin and para archer Sheetal Devi.
Sheetal, who won two gold medals at the Hangzhou Asian Games, is missing both her hands due to a rare condition called phocomelia and is the first international para archer to do archery without both her hands.
