WHAT IS ONLINE GAMBLING ?

Online gambling addiction is a serious issue that affects individuals of all ages, including kids and teens. The accessibility and ease of use of online gambling platforms make them particularly susceptible to addiction, especially for young people who may not fully understand the risks involved.

Addiction to online gambling shares many similarities with other forms of addiction, such as substance abuse. People may become compulsively drawn to online gambling, spending increasing amounts of time and money on it despite negative consequences in their personal and professional lives.

Factors contributing to online gambling addiction include:

  1. Accessibility: Online gambling platforms are easily accessible via smartphones, tablets, and computers, allowing individuals to gamble from virtually anywhere at any time.
  2. Anonymity: Online gambling provides a level of anonymity that traditional forms of gambling may not offer, making it easier for individuals to hide their behavior from friends and family.
  3. Lack of regulation: Online gambling regulations vary widely between jurisdictions, and some regions may have lax regulations or inadequate enforcement, allowing for potentially harmful practices.
  4. Marketing and advertising: Online gambling platforms often use aggressive marketing tactics to attract new users, including enticing promotions and bonuses that may appeal to vulnerable individuals.

When Arnie Wexler was seven years old, he began to gamble, placing bets and winning money on horse races and baseball cards.

“It became a bigger problem as I got older,” he stated.
Wexler would lose decades of his life to gambling, remembering the times in his life he would have missed due to his addiction, such as the birth of his first kid.
“After the physician emerged. “I asked, ‘How much does she weigh?’ without checking in with my wife or child.” Wexler thought back. “Seven pounds, one ounce,” he exclaimed. My first call was to the bookmaker, using a pocket full of dimes that my wife had given me to phone all of my friends and family after she delivered birth. On the daily double, I’m betting seven to one.”

Since his final wager on April 10, 1968, Wexler has established a hotline for gambling recovery:

Liam, who goes under a fictitious name to keep his identity safe, is thirteen years old and has been using a sports betting app for a few months. He mentioned that a few of his buddies are following suit.

The software, which goes by the unassuming name Sleeper, demands proof of age. But Liam suggested there was a simple way around it.

“You just use someone else’s ID; you don’t really need to show your own,” Liam stated. For younger children, it’s quite simple—you simply take a family member’s or your parent’s, and if you have the money, you may spend as much as you like.”

He said that one of the TikTok influencers he follows told him about the app.

Liam said, “He said it made the games more enjoyable.” “He gave you a code, and using that code, I put in $10, and it doubled into $20.”

Dozens of TikTok and YouTube influencers that posted promo codes and links or seemed to be sponsored by online gambling apps were discovered by 11Alive Investigators.

Dr. Adam Goodie is the director of the Georgia Gambling and Decision Lab and the head of the psychology department at the University of Georgia. He claimed that, especially in the past several years, there has been a noticeable trend of young people gaming.

In 2018, the Supreme Court made a decision that favored the sports betting sector, opening the door to internet gambling.

“The forms of gambling or gaming that are online are so much easier to get access to, easier to hide from your parents,” said Dr. Goodie. “Gambling can have very negative effects. I would hope that parents would discuss gambling with their children in the same way that they would talk to them about alcohol, drugs, relationships, and sexual activity.”

He went on to say that the only addiction that is legally recognized and categorized as a behavioral addiction is gambling, which may be why it doesn’t receive as much attention.

“All of the other official addictions involve putting a substance in your body: Alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, cocaine, heroin and others, except for gambling,” Goodie said. “But what they have in common is triggering some sort of pleasure response in the brain.”

Online gambling fever has seized the country since the Supreme Court decided in favor of the sports betting business in a landmark 2018 ruling that paved the way for legalization nationwide. With sports betting legal in over 30 states and more on the horizon, celebrity endorsements have taken over the airways. Some states have also authorized online casino gaming, including Connecticut, Michigan, and New Jersey.

Legislators and the gambling industry have tried to increase the amount of accountability for lawful internet gaming. According to Cait DeBaun, a representative of the American Gaming Association, a D.C.-based organization that advocates on behalf of the industry, the legal gambling and sports betting industry has implemented a number of safeguards in an effort to minimize online participation by underage Americans. The age to legally bet on sports online is 21 in almost all states.
