The government prohibits the display of offensive and pornographic content on 18 OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts.

In cooperation with a number of intermediaries, the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) has blocked 18 OTT platforms that distribute vulgar, filthy, and occasionally pornographic content.

In addition, 57 social media profiles linked to these platforms, 10 apps (three on the Apple App Store and seven on Google Play Store), and 19 websites have been made inaccessible to the general public in India.

Anurag Singh Thakur, the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, has stressed time and time again that platforms have a need to refrain from using the pretext of “creative expression” to spread vulgarity, abuse, and obscenity. Thakur declared on March 12, 2024, that 18 OTT platforms that were hosting filthy and offensive content had been removed.

The most recent decision was taken in compliance with the Information Technology Act, 2000, following consultations with experts in the domains of women’s rights, child rights, and media and entertainment, in addition to other Ministries and Departments of the Indian government.
